Cover your eyes You cover your eyes because it says, "Hear" and we must take everything literally, which is why some people wear boxes on their heads and straps on their wrists. I'm glad G*d didn't say to "bind these to your hearts", else we'd have to do heart surgery.
I think everyone misses the point to this passage, the greatest command, because the point of it is that G*d wants us to love him above all else and with everything we have. He loved David because he had a "heart for G*d." It's your heart that He wants. I hope that message is clear. It's your heart that he wants, not your deeds, not your words, not your sacrifices, nor not even your obedience.
You shall love The Lord, your G*d with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. Simple and beautiful words.
So glad we have to this day the commands to keep these traditions of old, such as the observation of Shabbat, preserving the Torah and all of Tanakh, high Holy days and the mitzvot among so many other things which without, today, we'd be no different from the rest. Can you imagine if our heart wasn't in it? Now imagine a world without Judaism. Preserving the Torah literally is a gateway to loving HaShem. David was who he was because as we all know according to Tehillim 119, he kept the Torah.
